Wax Carving for Casting - August 10

The sky is the limit in this class: bring your design ideas and join master jeweler and instructor, Travis Ogden, to learn how to create sculptural wax carvings that can be cast into one-of-a-kind jewelry. 

Carving wax is a great way to experiment with an affordable material to make a wide range of beautiful and exciting jewelry shapes. The shapes are completely unique and difficult to make using metal wire and sheet. The process allows for a wide range of artistic styles from minimalism to extremely intricate.

The beauty of learning this skill is that as long as your have a flexshaft or Dremel, you can do these carvings at home!  At the end of class, you will have the option to arrange to have your wax carvings cast by instructor Cheyenne Hughes for an additional charge.  

Students will learn:

• Fundamentals of designing in wax
• How to use different flex shaft attachments for wax carving
• Finishing and refining techniques that reduces cleanup after casting

• 8 contact hours, ages 14+ located at the Silver Peak Studio Classroom, 100.5 E. Cleveland St. Lafayette 80026
• Saturday, August 10 from 9:00-5:00
• # students 3 minimum, 6 maximum
• Price includes materials kit fee of $75 which includes wax, flexshaft burs, files and polishing cloth needed to create your wax carvings. All the materials are yours to keep so that you can carve wax at home!
• Prerequisite: Metals 1, Intro to Metalsmithing, or equivalent. Stone setting experience preferred.

About Travis Ogden: 

Travis Ogden earned a BFA in Metal Art from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters in Metal from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. He taught the University of Colorado Continuing Education Metals courses from 1982-1985. He also taught Metalsmithing and Casting courses at Front Range Community College.

Travis has been making one of a kind jewelry for over 30 years. In 2003 he won the Niche Award for a pair of Sterling Silver Hollow Anticlastic Candlesticks. Travis was a Niche Award Finalist 2007 and a finalist for two different entries in two different categories in 2009.

Besides making jewelry, Travis loves to create bronze sculpture and other hollow anticlastic metal sculptures. Many of his pieces take several days or weeks to complete, due to the complexity of design and technical expertise he exhibits in his work.
